IRC Server/Client - Chat App with NodeBB

Linux

  • Hello @all @phenomlab

NodeBB havenโ€™t got a great chat plugin or native chat system.
Global chat plugin is very good but he havenโ€™t got moderation tools and itโ€™s a problem.

For my test, I research a good IRC server for Debian 11 to install on my VM.
I would like to have Moderation Tools and a GUI for the Configuration (Moderation ,channels etcโ€ฆ)

For the Client, I have install The Lounge on the VM, itโ€™s a server client IRC wirth GUI, he is very great ๐Ÿ˜‰

There may be better than IRC servers/clients, but the IRC server/The lounge combo has the advantage of being quite simple without necessarily having user databases.
Afterwards, if we have a app or system that can interface with the NodeBB user database, that would be great. (IRC server too)

    Thanks my friends

@DownPW My personal take on this is that NodeBB is a forum application first and foremost, and itโ€™s PM system is arguably much better than those whom have previously attempted this (Flarum for example). With applications such as Discord, I (personally) see little room for a product like NodeBB to compete, and, a chat plugin would defeat the objective of a forum in the sense that it is not designed to retain archived information useful for other visitors to the site.

In addition, I see this as harmful to Google searches and general SEO. The chat plugin discussions would not be public, meaning that any useful information contained in the chats themselves are inaccessible to others.

  • So sorry Mark @phenomlab for my answer delay, Iโ€™ve been pretty busy lately ๐Ÿ˜ž

I respect your point of view on this.
however, I would like to test this even for fun.

After research, I will install InspIRCd for test and Use The Lounge for the client.

I see rocketchat too but I have no fund a great tutorial for install.

Iโ€™m still looking for a way to interface the NodeBB database (user/password) with another chat application.

The goal would be for a NodeBB user to be able to use their nodeBB credentials to connect to chat (Irc or other applications)

    cya ๐Ÿ˜™

@DownPW I think RocketChat is the most popular these days. I also know there is a plugin that allows NodeBB sessions to persist across applications so that night be worth looking at in terms of authentication.

  • We still use Skype ๐Ÿคฃ these days itโ€™s very slow, we thought of switching to discord for our internal use but we donโ€™t want to miss chay history.

Chatmantra .io or something is also really nice

@Hari not sure from the consumer perspective, but Skype has been all but completely consumed by Microsoft Teams when it comes to business usage.

@phenomlab said in Which email client do you use?: @DownPW Isnโ€™t this more of an email server in itโ€™s own right rather than an email client? Oh yes sorryโ€ฆ I didnโ€™t pay attention

@Panda if you used the Ubuntu PPA, I think this only goes as far as 6.x if I recall correctly.

Use this code git fetch # Grab the latest code from the NodeBB repository git checkout v3.x git reset --hard origin/v3.x And you will have the latest version without specifying it https://docs.nodebb.org/configuring/upgrade/

@Panda Itโ€™s the best itโ€™s ever been to be honest. Iโ€™ve used a myriad of systems in the past - most notably, WordPress, and then Flarum (which for SEO, was absolutely dire - they never even had SEO out of the box, and relied on a third party extension to do it), and NodeBB easily fares the best - see below example https://www.google.com/search?q=site%3Asudonix.org&oq=site%3Asudonix.org&aqs=chrome..69i57j69i60j69i58j69i60l2.9039j0j3&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8#ip=1 However, this was not without significant effort on my part once Iโ€™d migrated from COM to ORG - see below posts https://community.nodebb.org/topic/17286/google-crawl-error-after-site-migration/17?_=1688461250365 And also https://support.google.com/webmasters/thread/221027803?hl=en&msgid=221464164 It was painful to say the least - as it turns out, there was an issue in NodeBB core that prevented spiders from getting to content, which as far as I understand, is now fixed. SEO in itself is a dark art - a black box that nobody really fully understands, and itโ€™s essentially going to boil down to one thing - โ€œcontentโ€. Googleโ€™s algorithm for indexing has also changed dramatically over the years. They only now crawl content that has value, so if it believes that your site has nothing to offer, it will simply skip it.
