Which email client do you use?

Discussion
  • As I have multiple email accounts to manage (wife, dad, parents-in-law, myself, Sudonix etc) I decided to use an email client - something I’ve not done for years on the personal front. However, flipping between online only accounts is never a great experience, so I wanted something with a bit more flexibility - and more importantly, a unified view for mail in terms of all inboxes.

My question here is basically, which email client do you prefer?

@phenomlab I use two email clients… I tried to use a single one, but it was not possible due to my “clean inbox” strategy that I adopted over the years… so I use Apple Mail and Thunderbird…

I -also- have many separate email addresses (ashamed to write it down the count 🤣 )… I combine all important ones under Apple Mail… And these are important personal and work emails and I keep this inbox clean (as much as possible). I read the email (if nothing needs to be done, archieve it) and tag it… When I am done, I archieve it… And I tag it if necessary…

And I mainly use Thunderbird for my two separate outlook/hotmail accounts… These are for “spammy” or frequent unimportant emails… Unfortunately there is no way for me to get away from them. So, for these email accounts, I do not even display the number of emails on the client, because it is full of spam that I will not read … I use outlook account for this purpose because Microsoft sucks at identifying real/spam emails…

just to be clear… I tag it and archieve it, because I realized that if I do not do that, I keep reading the same emails over and over during the day and remember what it was, and overall delay them, so this makes it more efficient timewise…

when I have time, I go over my “red” action needed flags first…

because Microsoft sucks at identifying real/spam emails…

    Isn’t that the truth.

  • Something of an update here. I decided to install Betterbird to see what it had to offer over Thunderbird, and landed up playing with the interface to see if I could get it to something resembling what I’d consider workable.

The end result surprised me. I managed to get the appearance I liked, and along with some minor tweaks and add ons, I was also able to obtain the functionality I needed.

I’ll stick with this for a while and see how it goes, but so far, it looks promising.

  • Been using Betterbird for a couple of days now, and it’s starting to win me over…

@cagatay Agreed on the business front given the update of Office365, although what about for usage at a personal level?

  • i have not see anyone in Turkey who has a personal email account and use ist actively.
We use our personel emails when registering with banks, shopping stores and e commerce web sites.
For this reason, people do not care which email client they use.
This is usually the email client offered by the phones they use.

Really? That sounds quite odd to be honest, but I’ll take your word for it! I think literally everyone these days has a personal email account they use all the time - I know I do!

  • I use Thunderbird & Proton Mails own app, both work well.

I’ve always used Thunderbird ever since using Ubuntu years back 👍🏻.

@JAC It’s a fork of Thunderbird, and better

Betterbird is a fine-tuned version of Mozilla Thunderbird, Thunderbird on steroids, if you will.

@phenomlab I’ve downloaded this but not set it up yet, are you enjoying using it?

@JAC Seems to meet all of my individual needs, so it’s a win for me. The “New Outlook” is nothing more than a webapp and not an actual application, so even with the latest version being marked for production, it’s too limited for my own purposes - one of the showstoppers is the lack of a unified mailbox.

  • I have been switching my gmail emails over to Proton Mail. I like how you can create fake emails and use for different websites so if they start sending you spam, you can just delete the fake email and bam, no more spam.

I have found over the years that email clients just seem to lack looks, features, functionality and such. I am interested in Betterbird though, especially since it seems very customizable.

I really like this feature, I’ve found some websites/companies don’t like the passmail domain and accounts have been flagged until I’ve been able to prove I’m not a bot or anything.

Having been recently working with @JAC I can certainly attest to both the usefulness, and some of the issues that arise because of that same usage. I really see this as a plus, and it’s certainly something I am looking to adopt.

@phenomlab I presume this is why they thought it was fraudulent activity 😉.

@phenomlab well I hope that a better company steps up and puts in a higher bid. If I had the money I would buy TikTok. That platform is a money makers dream. So many people on it now er or was. I think MS will just mess it up like they do everything else. Hell, they can’t even get their own software to work correctly, how would they even keep that one up and running.

@Panda said in Ross Ulbricht pardoned by Trump: So @phenomlab are you arguing that a ‘Double life +40’ sentence is what you would have been in support of, i.e. no release at any stage?? Yes, exactly. Let’s not forget the reason for the sentence in the first place, plus the fact that he created Silk Road with the intent for it to be used for nefarious purposes, and stood to make a lot of money from it. He fully intended to take advantage of the profit being returned at the expense of those people who died, and couldn’t care less about the demise of others as long as he was able to make money.

@phenomlab said in What's your view on RSS - is it dead technology?: @JAC would be keen to get your views around RSS feeds I’ve used RSS feeds over the years to pull in articles on forums and websites. I also have an RSS feed app on my phone that contains selective football news, it’s still an incredibly handful tool for me.

@crazycells yes, I think it certainly has a place - but to enrich knowledge, rather than simply substitute it. I remember years ago when I did my exams. You weren’t allowed a calculator or anything like that and had to show your workings on a separate piece of paper which you were given additional marks for. These days, they use iPads etc in schools, so the art of writing a letter or needing to perform mathematical calculations in your head is gone. One of my very first jobs was in a newsagent who had a really old till (yes, not a Point-Of-Service like you have today) - all this till did was add up the individual figures, but didn’t tell you how much change to give - you had to do that part. Sounds simple enough, but with technology doing everything for us these days, our basic skills (think the “Three R’s”, and see example below) have taken a back seat and I think that’s made us lazy. https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/three R's Again, my point here being to enrich - not completely replace basic skills we learn as we age.

@phenomlab said in is my DMARC configured correctly?: you’ll get one from every domain that receives email from yours. Today I have received another mail from outlook DMARC, i was referring to your reply again and found it very helpful/informative. thanks again. I wish sudonix 100 more great years ahead!
