@phenomlab Yes, I updated it right away after I created the password when first setting it up. Then I made my configurations.
Virgin router replacement

@phenomlab should I login to the settings later?
-
@JAC Yes, and provide a screenshot
-
@phenomlab not a problem mate will do. Once logged in is there a particular page you want me to screenshot, or is it the settings mainly?
-
@JAC Should be in the settings. Not sure exactly where it is though.
-
@phenomlab thanks pal, will sort when back in, probably be around 5ish.
-
@JAC Thanks. Can you also plug the powerline adapters back in so I can see what port speed it gets?

I can do, but I don’t really use them anymore. Could this fix an issue?

Ethernet (wired) will always be faster - see below
One thing I would say is I’ve had this app on shield before, it always pretty much doubles my speed that I see off other apps.
-
@JAC Yes - 100%. Always go for wired over wireless where you can.
-
@phenomlab I’d rather buy some more and proper cables, I’m not actually sure where they’d be, I’ve not used them in probably over a year since Virgin gave us the pods .
If you’ve any advice on the best cables and adapters to get pal?
-
@JAC I seem to recall us having this discussion before ?
Get the below for the 1Gbps Powerline adapters
And the below for the network cables (you obviously want 2)
-
@phenomlab thanks Mark.
I’ve just gone back through my purchases, and these are the ones I got last time - https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272237603311?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=HLCeEMeeRHi&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=-me6l2XtTGS&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
Having said that I did have two sets, I’m sure the second set I purchased were 1gbps.
EDIT: this is the ones I have now, but it’s just two adapters the same as the one on the right hand side of the image. - Deal: Tenda PH5 AV1000 Wi-Fi Powerline Adapter Kit with Gigabit Ports, Wi-Fi Powerline Booster, Broadband/WiFi Extender, Plug and Play, Up to 300m range, for HD/3D/4K Video Streaming and Gaming, UK Plug https://amzn.eu/d/8JQn2Ox
This is more accurate - https://amzn.eu/d/6IMNts4
Tenda Wi-Fi 6 Extender Booster AX1500Mbps Dual Band Wi-Fi 6 Range Extender, Broadband/Wi-Fi Extender, Wi-Fi Booster/Hotspot with 1 Gigabit Port, Built-In Access Point Mode, Easy Setup, UK Plug (A23) https://amzn.eu/d/63A0itX
Which is better out of them or the ones you posted mate? I can try find them, but may be worth ordering them later if I can’t find them, it’s been a year and who knows with the Mrs .

This is the one that arrived earlier that I’m going to use in a minute to test on the shield. - https://amzn.eu/d/9FPWB1O

What!!!? 🧐🧐🧐
Yes. A VPN will always slow the speed down because it will proxy all traffic upstream to another server. 493Mbps is certainly more than acceptable to that device, and is excellent for Wifi.
I know you use the VPN to gain access to US based TV programs etc, so it’s a must have, but the speed drop is always inevitable.

That’s really opened my eyes, I must say!
Very surprised with such low speeds with the VPN running through, is there no way to increase these or is it just pretty much a case of putting up with it? I constantly run the VPN.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your setup mate. 878Mbps is a great speed, and you’re going to be hard pushed to top that. Obviously, wired without the VPN is the optimum setting.
It is a great speed yes, I’m happy to finally see them sorts of speeds, however it is without the VPN running.
Should I still go ahead and order / find the powerline adapters to increase the speed upstairs? Of course the tests just done are right next to the router.

You don’t have much choice other than to put up with it I’m afraid. You try other servers in the same region, although you’re probably connecting to a US based server which will add what is called latency to your overall speed. From the UK to the US is typically around 77ms (milliseconds), and whilst that doesn’t sound like much (not even 1/100th of a second) your traffic isn’t the only request and it really depends on how many other connection requests there are at the same time.
Think 3 lanes of traffic on a motorway designed originally for 5 lanes. The speed decrease is the result of that congestion, or perhaps limited by the edge VPN server itself to ensure it is not overwhelmed. Basically, even though you can transmit and receive at high speed, it does not mean the device sending the traffic back will let you receive at that speed as that would hamper the service for everyone else.
You’ll probably see quite an increase in speed if you connect to a local VPN server, although that defeats the object as you need to connect to the US to get access to their streaming services.
