Nord VPN with Roku

Solved Configure
  • Do you know how hard it would be to connect the Nord VPN to the Roku stick or if there are easier streaming devices to connect to.

  • @phenomlab “However, you won’t be able to install and set up the VPN service provider the same way you’d do with other NordVPN supported devices.”

Many thanks for the information. What I’m trying to work out is how much simpler connecting to the VPN would be using other streaming sticks?

@jac what this means is that you can’t install software and make it work, but if you are able to change the network settings for the stick itself, then this could work.

However, the process is somewhat convoluted, but possible. The way it would work is as follows

    1. On a laptop or PC, connect to NordVPN in the usual manner
    2. Share the internet connection meaning other devices can connect to it
    3. Setup the Roku stock so that it connects directly to your newly created internet connection which is routed via the VPN

Another way to do this would be to install the NordVPN software on a mobile phone and then use that as a tethering point for the Roku stock to connect to. Just ensure you switch off the mobile network when doing this to avoid unwanted large charges.

The overall principle here is to get the Roku stock to route it’s traffic over NordVPN by effective use of an internet proxy.

@phenomlab Thanks for the information Mark, I’m hoping to give this a go once I’ve subscribed to Nord VPN.

I do of course for my sins possess a Fire Stick, would this be an easier set up with the VPN?

@jac it’ll be the same process as you can’t install software on the hardware stick. By joining the stick to a “sudo network” that is then fed through the VPN, you’ll be essentially using the stick though the tunelled connection. Via NordVPN on the device hosting the network you’re sharing, you can quickly change the country you are connecting to dependant on your needs.

@phenomlab Thanks Mark, I’ll certainly be giving this a go. How does this effect other users just casually connecting to the normal internet hub?

It won’t. They will still continue to use the Wifi access point as normal.

@jac 🙂 ok. No issues. Was more of a curiosity than anything else.

@Panda said in Spam spam spam: ok, yes Ive seen the queue, it shows IP, but doesnt have a field for comments from registrant. It’s not designed for that. It merely serves as a gateway between posts appearing on your form or not. @Panda said in Spam spam spam: It would be better if nodebb had this plugin included in ACP list, as not only then do you know its approved and should work, but many people cant or dont want to use CLI on the server That’s a question for the NodeBB devs but in all honesty you can’t not use the CLI when installing nodebb so to be this isn’t a big deal.

@Panda it will use SMTP. In all cases, I never use any plugin to send email. I’ll always send it raw.

A more efficient way of including this would be to not over complicate it and leverage a standard iframe (providing the CSP headers of the remote site permit this) like below <iframe src="https://www.classmarker.com/online-test/start/?quiz=gag66aea7922f0a5" width="700" height="800"></iframe> This works first time every time on your site as intended.

@veronikya said in mongodb replica set: The host’s local dns resolution is not configured. The problem of the host’s hosts being unable to be resolved in docker has been solved. Surprisingly Solution: Edit the /etc/resovel.conf file Add 127.0.0.53 One immediate issue I can think of here is that editing resolv.conf directly is no longer supported and not recommended (because the changes do not survive a reboot) - unless you install the resolvconf package?

@JAC said in KeepSolid VPN Unlimited DEAL: although all are going to have their own flaws one way or another, Exactly that - none of them are going to suit every individual purpose. You have to read the reviews, decide what functionality you need, and then make a judgement call for yourself (and your own unique needs). There is no “wrong or right”, although I would steer clear of those that do not have a no-logs policy for privacy reasons alone.

@crazycells briefly, yes. I think what concerns be the most with home brew VPN convective like this is a lack of security updates, and potentially leaving yourself open. I’ve yet to actually try it, but I know there are a variety of ways to achieve the same goal.
