@My-Account said in Hi there: That’s cool to know, a salute from my side, nowadays people like you are found very rarely, trust me everyone wants to monetize their content over random tracking and advertising stuff. There’s a very small portion of the open-source community fighting to make the web better. Thanks. I’m really not into monetizing content, or charging someone the earth for a solution to a problem. I get much more satisfaction from the fact that users return on a regular basis and get the help they need with technical issues, plus insights into areas which they are less comfortable. The entire point of this site is to allow users to ask questions and get real world answers whilst at the same time, learning as they go.

The real issue here is that most people consider forums to be “dead” in the sense that nobody uses them anymore, and social media groups have taken their place. Their once dominant stance in the 90’s and early 00’s will never be experienced again, but having said that, there are a number of forums that did in fact survive the social media onslaught, and still enjoy a large user base. Forums tend to be niche. One that immediately sticks out is Reddit - despite looking like it was designed in the 80s, it still has an enormous user base. Another is Stack Overflow, which needs no introduction. The key to any forum is the content it offers, and the more people whom contribute in terms of posting , the more popular and widely respected it becomes as a reliable source of information. Forums are still intensely popular with gamers, alongside those that offer tips on hacking etc.

@phenomlab said in Any plugin to speed up UI to insert links to existing posts?: @qwinter I guess I’m a traditionalist, or perhaps old fashioned. I still use notepad and notepad++ for note taking during meetings. I like the simplicity and rawness and I’ll often use both for a scratchpad when needed. for me it is joplin I use Joplin and use my empty OneDrive for synchronization (with E2EE) from all of my devices.

@qwinter yes, zoom backgrounds work in Linux also, but only for supported CPU and graphics cards. There’s also green screen support which I haven’t tested, so can’t really comment on it’s effectiveness (also not willing to splash out on a professional green screen which I’d seldom use). I’ve chosen the Windows 11 primary route for the time being as I unfortunately need the integration. I’m pleasantly surprised by Windows 11 in fact, and it is entirely possible to control the privacy settings - there’s a dedicated section for this.

@qwinter Yes, although the experience would be very much degraded without websockets.

@marusaky Good post. The real issue with Flarum is that even the most minor of changes requires a extension, which is crazy. With NodeBB, you can make changes on the fly very easily, and without too much effort. There is an element of learning when it comes to making changes to any platform, but Javascript is not difficult at all once you get used to it, and there’s also extensive support for jQuery (and hundreds of code snippets on the internet you can easily adapt and tailor to your own needs) For years, phpBB used to reign supreme - now it’s incredibly dated, and always did have the most confusing admin panel I’ve ever seen.

@phenomlab Well… it is complicated… My journey is long, not the end all, be all, and likely require a substantial beelog post. But yeah, as mentioned in one of my bee log articles I linked to somewhere else hereabouts, the big trifecta are 1) Web browser, 2) Terminal, and 3) Editor. Those last two are all command line driven whilst the fist is predominantly gui/rodent driven. Of course there are some one off apps here and there that are predominantly gui driven but they are not part of my daily fare, used to rarely to be of consequence. So, go figure what percentages of time you may spend in each. Maybe, just maybe, that DE is getting in your way more than accelerating productivity? Just maybe… maybe not.

@gotwf yeah, good points. I’d consider myself proficient in JS so for me it’s more of a learning curve coming from MySQL (and hence phpMyAdmin).

@gotwf said in How Do We Feel About SSPL?: And the details warrant discussion. Or… not?? Yes, but the idea is for discussion to be balanced rather than one-sided.

@phenomlab said in Android emoji pack: @jac It’s not their problem - it’s the maintainer of the third party library they use. The below CSS will resolve that img.not-responsive.emoji.emoji-android.emoji--skin-tone-2 { display: none; } Ah I understand mate, thank you for all these very good changes mate, fantastic!!
