AI... A new dawn, or the demise of humanity ?

More than 3,000 artists have called for Christie’s to cancel its first-ever AI art auction, calling it “mass theft” of human artists’ work.
-
This article is just unbelievable. It literally sent shivers down my spine
@phenomlab wow that is insane. With friends like that who need enemies. Nothing is sacred anymore, and makes me think that all photos and everything should be taking off the internet. All someone has to do is get access to a photo of you or a family member of yours to create garbage like this.

@phenomlab If I knew how to draw and be an artist, or even know how to duck tape a banana to a wall and found out that AI was stealing my work, I would be mad too.

@phenomlab makes me wonder if West was actually the one that put up the store or if it was AI doing all of that? And yes, I think there needs to be something in regards to using real people for making fake videos. I don’t know if I like the idea of the government getting involved, because they usually just screw things up and line their pockets with money from tax payers. But something somehow should be done.

@Madchatthew from what I’ve read, the site was put up by West. He hasn’t publicly denied it.

@phenomlab wow that is crazy how stuff like that exist these days, especially with the history of the world and such. Maybe we don’t learn as much as we think from past mistakes. Although, maybe he is the exception to the rule that 99% of people don’t think that way.

@Madchatthew Agreed. Mr West has also been posting antisemitic messages on X and then closed his account. Disgusting.

@phenomlab yes that is disgusting and there is already so much hate in the world, we don’t need more of it.
-
I have to say I’m not seeing many positives to this AI. I’m sure there’s plenty, but it seems to be scary some of things that are coming out.

@Madchatthew 100%.

@JAC yeah it seems like there is more scary things coming from AI than there is good things. I also wonder if it is the scary stuff that makes it more into the media than the good. Usually, it is the scary and bad things that make a story. I mean you do have some of those stories that are good that make it into an article but it seems like the scary, evil things are what definitely make it, so they can make money.
But yeah, the people out there that abuse AI and do this kind of thing need to be dealt with. But what to do with them or about it is something that I don’t have an answer to.

@Madchatthew this is a good point - the bad stuff being reported certainly does make for compelling reading, but how much of it is FUD vs reality? Admittedly, the FUD side of things could be in relation to scaremongering tactics as a means of self preservation (for those industries looking to keep their livelihood intact and are in the firing line for being replaced by AI), but I don’t think that applies to everything you read.
I absolutely believe there is an inherent risk if AI is misused, or deliberately leveraged for nefarious purposes. Whilst I obviously don’t want to come across as all "Hollywood ", it’s a possibility rather than a probability at this stage.

@phenomlab Yes this is a very dangerous use of AI and it has already proven how people easily believe AI generated people and such. Also, people will tend to just believe everything they see and hear.

Yes, and without question, which makes this so much worse.

100% agree with this. The news outlets will always publish the bad news stories as they sell / grab people’s attention, it just appears to me like there’s the chance for so much bad to come out of AI rather than the good stuff.

@JAC and there doesn’t seem to be enough of the good stuff to counter the bad. Not as far as I see, anyway.
-
Yes, I agree with you both, @JAC, @phenomlab, that it does seem like the bad out weighs the good. I don’t think it always means that will be the case, at least I hope not, and that the good things will start out shining the bad things. Only time will tell I spose.
