Thank you Mark, the changes look fantastic!!
Who uses Flarum?
-
@JAC I also note that the Nothing community uses Flarumโฆ
-
@phenomlab noticed this myself mate. Interesting - as you know Iโve always wanted to take the plunge back to Flarum.
-
@JAC Each to their own - Iโm not migrating back to that mess, ever.
-
Iโd hate to be banned for talking about Flarum here . Just kidding, I know your thoughts on it, but I canโt see past this sort of thriving community something Iโm trying to achieve, but I can also see the issues it could pose and the drawbacks compared with NodeBB.
-
@JAC Itโs not the platform mate, itโs the content And youโll never banned for talking about anything here as long as it relates and resonates. Sudonix is vendor agnostic, as you know.

No no, of course completely understand that. Letโs just say that Arsenal forum is jam packed with content then, itโs a good example of Flarum being used successfully.
Thank you Sir .

Looks like that forum has migrated over to Flarum, established in 2010! No wonder itโs popular .
-
@JAC Iโve forked this into itโs own topic, as I think itโs 100% worthy of a discussion - but I donโt want to derail the original thread
-
@phenomlab Thanks, apologies for that.
-
@JAC Not at all. Some of the best discussions are often borne out of others that arenโt related. I have no issue with it, and would like to continue this discussion here.
-
@phenomlab thanks pal.
Do I think NodeBB is the more rounded and comfortable forum community software 100%.
Do I think Flarum has potential, yes but as of now and possibly for some time itโs nowhere near the standard of NodeBB and what they can offer.
I think purely for a football related forum the layout of the threads of Flarum would maybe appeal to users, I suppose the lazy user who just wants the latest topics in a list .

Thatโs how it works now under NodeBB though?
-
@phenomlab certainly the way Iโve got my forum set out is the homepage displays the categories.
Flarum is a simple layout in comparison but NodeBB is far superior, I mean do you remember the SEO options which I still believe hasnโt been fixed.
-
@JAC not fixed and still not part of core either last time I looked. Flarum always suffered in terms of speed being based on PHP and MySql.
-
@JAC this comment at the top of the initial post says it all
Please vote for the dev team to take it seriously.
Really? The responses from one of the core developers never filled me with much hope either.

I found Flarum when I was looking for a forum software that was supposed to be different and more modern. One of the things that I didnโt like with Flarum is that you had to make sure and setup all of the php backend and make sure you had all the right extensions and then lack of ease of setting it up.
I did like the layout of it and the idea, but as time went on the things that Phenomlab pointed out made it so that I didnโt want to use it either. Which is too bad because I did like it. Then I checked out Nodebb and fell in love with it. Especially since you didnโt have to do any of the extra setup with php. JS just works right out of the box. I still havenโt made up my mind about having to recompile Nodebb after making some of the changes, as that can take a bit of time. But overall I like it a lot.
I would also consider using Nodebb in place of Wordpress as well. It seems to work well on this site to have blog posts and such.

It shouldnโt take long to recompile - typically around 10-15 seconds on reasonable hardware. You just execute
./nodebb build
-
@phenomlab I usually end up doing it from the settings page in nodebb, so maybe that is why it seems to take awhile? Maybe if I did the recompile through the command line it doesnโt take as long? Or maybe it was in the way I had it setup before.
-
@Madchatthew I think the times are roughly the same to be honest?
