@phenomlab oh wow, I would be pissed too and would want to sue. I would think that Meta would need to pay some sort of royalties or something for every piece of literature it used to train it’s AI and then anytime the AI references that literature then royalties would need to be paid. That is crazy and I don’t believe they should get away with doing that.

Unless I am missing something here, but it seemed pretty straight forward.

@Madchatthew To me, it appears as though Meta considers itself “entitled” to take whatever it wants for free. Not how it works in this world, and it’s a liberty to say the least. Content creators have every right to be up in arms about this.

OpenAI is suing Elon Musk over claims he has tried “nonstop” to slow down its business for his own benefit.

The company accuses the Tesla boss of using “bad-faith tactics” against OpenAI to help him control cutting-edge AI technology.

@phenomlab this is interesting. There are a lot of artists that are refusing to use and hate AI due to it stealing some of their works and dubbing it as it’s own. The only reason I know this is because my daughter loves art and some of the youtube creators we let her watch talk about this. I do like the quote that they use in the article. You can usually pickup on the feelings and passion when someone writes something and while AI may be able to write something in the same format and wording you might write something, the heart and passion isn’t going to be in it.

@Madchatthew yes, I think this is where AI falls short as it’s unable to convey emotion. Much in the same manner as a poorly worded email or text message does the same in the sense that it can easily be misconstrued owing to the recipient not being able to determine tone for example - this obviously isn’t transmitted with only words, and therefore, the recipient has to try and determine how the message sound be interpreted - which is, in most cases, wrong.

Most musicians have a trademark style of playing (for example, guitar), and it’s impassible for this to be truly replicated by AI. A human playing the same instrument could play the same melody multiple times and it would be different on each occasion.

@phenomlab you know if you or I were to copy their music, we would for sure get sued for a lot of money and to cease and desist. Maybe that is what they need to do for AI and those companies that are running those AIs. Ultimately, those companies have to be feeding their AI some of that data and such in one way or another, so they should be held responsible. Or if they want to use that data, then they should need to pay royalties or something every time that set of data is accessed by someone using their AI.

@Madchatthew good points. However, I suspect that this data is being crawled anonymously, so in this case, I do wonder how enforceable a cease and desist would be.

@phenomlab that makes sense that it is done anonymously. But wouldn’t the company have to tell the AI to crawl this type of data or that type of data or tell it to crawl all data type of deal? You would think that companies would be able to put that restriction on it for those purposes, but maybe not?

@Madchatthew only by placing that data behind a paywall, or behind a session type such as a login.

The real issue here is the plethora of mp3 files available on public ftp servers which can easily be crawled even if the original artist declines to grant permission.

@phenomlab that is really interesting. I read an article where they had two AIs communicate with each other and it didn’t take very long and they started making up their own language so they could communicate faster. After a while of AI doing this, those doing the experiment shut it down because they couldn’t keep up and had no clue what the AIs were communicating about. I will have to see if I can find that article.

@phenomlab i don’t trust Google or it’s AI any further than I could throw a building. I know it sounds a little hypocritical of me to say that when I use good search. I always question the results that Google’s AI displays at the top though.

@Madchatthew I think everyone has used Google search without even knowing it to be honest - even those who class themselves as purists.

I too have never trusted Google. You’re not alone!
