Which product is the best for VPN?
-
@phenomlab Yep. I think I noted above that that deal was only thru 9/20. New “deal” though:
Just not quite THE deal.
fwiw; I am becoming less than keen on them. Only minimal testing as of yet as I have been busy w/other things. Maybe okay for general browsing but kind of sucky on streaming and/or multiple tabs/containers. At least on desktop FF browser app. Also, I have yet to grok where one can choose various protocols, e.g. wireguard. Maybe easily resolved by a reach out to support but … busy with other stuff as of late so take the above with a dose of salt. Gotta run
For what it’s worth I’ve just signed up for 2 years. Interestingly I wonder if I do indeed appear to have a different IP? Can you confirm this Mark?
@jac That’s correct. You’re sitting behind their proxy services which is how all VPN providers work.
Fully expected

@gotwf Yes, in my testing (I’m a little late posting here - sorry) I found that the speed was staggeringly decreased when using the proxy services. For example, I have 380mbps internet at home, and when connected to the VPN, I was only getting around one third of that.
I guess this is in line with @gotwf findings. For browsing in general it’s probably fine, but for streaming is probably a different story altogether.

It’s my first VPN, I’m happy to possibly take a hit

@jac interesting. How does this compare to your actual line speed ?

@jac try speedtest.net
Current speed 55.9 mate.
However I’m connected to a multi hop server which is Australia > USA and that’s showing 53.41mbps.

I guess it depends which server you connect to?
Don’t really have any complaints so far anyway

My Sufshark 30 day trial is close to expiring. And I am planning to request a refund. Speed is not that great, depending on when you connect: e.g. decreases during prime time hours of selected server’s time zone. Also random disconnects. Not my network cuz other things work, e.g. can ping whatever from other boxes.
Yet… this puppy gets rave reviews like… everywhere! I know, do not believe ANY thing you read on the 'net from ANY site sporting ads cuz the moral compass is just not there anymore and these “influencers” will happily w***e their souls… Yet… then otoh, perhaps I am the problem? Which brings me to…
Be all that as it may, curious if anyone members here have tested Surfshark, and, if so, what is your impression?
Thx. o/

I think @JAC has recently signed up. I’m not being swayed from NordVPN presently as it’s never let me down or dropped below what I’d expect. Support is top notch also.

@phenomlab Thx. I could live w/the speed situation. The random disconnects are a bit more disconcerting. Maybe I’ll standby for another day or two, pending @JAC reports.

@gotwf yes, I think the disconnects would be enough to put me off - particularly as when you lose connection, the default is to black hole the actual connection as unprotected meaning until the link is established again, you have nothing at all unless you kill the application itself (or disable that specific function)
