Is Facebook as we know it going to change?

  • @phenomlab to some it is a diary and a way of life now. To me it’s just a simple way to keep in touch with family, but I hardly ever use it and wish I never had! 😆

    @jac You know what - I’ve NEVER used it. I only subscribed once to see what all the fuss was about, that lasted no more than 12 minutes before I deleted the account.

    @phenomlab It’s the same for me really I had an account years ago and then deleted it, only to get a new one years later to keep in touch with family. Even now I very hardly log on.

    It’s just a glorified diary for people to put all their c**p on.

    @jac Yeah, exactly. I really can’t see any point to a platform where you feel compelled to post pictures of your dinner or selfies that make you look like a fish 🐟

    @phenomlab absolutely, my neighbor posts her life on there. I hate it.

    @jac I have the same with family members - even down to holiday dates and whey they are going. Might as well just put a sign above the door that says “we’re on holiday - feel free to break in”.

    Snap mate, this is the thing that most annoys me about it. Not only that but feel free to look towards my house too whilst you’re at it 😉. Facebook is an absolute joke and has taken over some people’s life’s quite frankly.

    @jac Yeah - serial posters, as I refer to them. I just don’t get the entire point of “checking in” to somewhere. Isn’t there any part of your life that you consider private??

    And it’s always “such a such said this on Facebook” or “it was on Facebook” etc. Really grates on mate mate 😉😆.

    @jac That makes two of us. In fact, this very news article (obviously not real - parody) was posted on Facebook. An acquaintance of my family (I call them that as they certainly aren’t friends 🙂 ) asked my wife if I had trouble getting home that night as she’d read on Facebook that a train had been stolen.

    My wife tried to keep a straight face as she informed this person “do you realise what you’ve just said” ??

    😆. The concept of Facebook was probably a good idea at the time for what it was, but it’s certainly a poisoned chalice and I for one don’t trust it.

    @jac And neither do I. That’s why you won’t find any sharing or sign-on / register abilities involving Fakebook here.

  • Facef*** will never change. Unless people change and demand accountability. And then be ready to vote with their feet. This, I think, is a rather impossible bar for the average luser’s to clear. Hence…

    @gotwf Great analogy 🙂

    @JAC wow. Thanks for the great comments. They are truly appreciated. I tend to agree with the social media comments you’ve made. This is made all the more prominent in relation to recent events in Southport for example, and toxicity is a huge issue. Just look at some of the comments from trolls - they are truly disgusting, and the perpetrators seem to take great delight in the anonymity the Internet affords them. forums in general are much more subject focused, easier to moderate and users are less likely to be banned because they are there for a specific interest or reason, not to cause trouble. Agreed, although discussions can still get out of hand and quite often, these are left to run riot and quickly spiral out of control. A great example of that is here https://sudonix.org/topic/141/how-to-destroy-a-community-before-it-s-even-built there’s something much more calming about coming to a specific page at your fancy, posting and taking part in healthy debates over the real mishmash of social media. Yes, I personally prefer the atmosphere of a forum against the backdrop of unwanted noise via social media.

    @JAC yeah, I’ve never seen the appeal. I tried to get into LinkedIn a while back and then gave up because it’s just chock full of people who have far too much time on their hands telling anyone who will listen about how great they are and what they have achieved. Actions speak louder than words.
