  • WeChat is too hot in China, Alipay and WeChat can’t be separated from each and every one of us, including the government, the cashless era is their home turf, they can control the direction of public opinion and the flow of money for all the people, Musk’s ambition is too big, I don’t think Musk is stupid, he has his own ambition, there’s no way around it

@veronikya not stupid, no - but certainly a grandiose view of his own abilities which might not match reality.

  • Just reading the below article - seems WeChat is sewn into literally everything - everyday life in China

    https://www.bbc.com/news/business-66333633

Clearly a level of success that Musk is keen to emulate.

@phenomlab this will not be successful in the US. We already have Google graveyard that proves this… People do not want to “merge” various businesses into one. They prefer to keep them separated.

Whenever someone else becomes successful Google just replicates the product but fails miserably… Who needs another “Facebook” (Google+) while we have the original one? Or Google Wave or Hangouts (messenger/skype), Stadia (Playstation/Xbox competitor) , URL shortener (bit ly)… or even if we go back ~20 years… Google Videos was horrible compared to youtube or Dailymotion, but in this case, google just bought youtube before canceling google videos… (I guess their best investment)

I do not think Elon is as smart as the people in Google… We will see another website soon “killed by Elon” lol

Today I realized that twitter app on my phone turned into “X”… I think it is time for Zuckerberg to check-mate Elon… He can re-brand his new “Trends” app into “Twitter” lol… It will create more traffic for sure… and he was trying to create a Twitter anyways, and clearly Elon is trying to get away from “Twitter”, so it is a chance for Zuckerberg 🤣

Rumour has it that Threads has seriously lost momentum in terms of signups. The first wave was over 100m, but that has since flatlined.

@phenomlab I am not surprised. even I realized that I did not get its name right while writing lol

  • maybe it is just me, but I feel like people are hesitant to put all their eggs in the same basket, they will just not trust big companies… so whatever Mark replicates will not really be successful. No one will switch to Threads while we have Twitter. These new apps should come from independent sources “to be cool”

@crazycells Yes, this is a good point. I think that the first “100 million” registrations were comprised of those with Instagram accounts who simply were curious and decided to sign up to see what all the fuss was about, and those brand strategists who only signed up to secure their own brand in case Threads really took off.

As I mentioned earlier, the momentum has slowed significantly since then.

@phenomlab this is good. I see this happen a lot. It is unclear because usually it is a group talking and going over things and trying to plan according to the knowledge that they have with what is working and not working now. And yet some time down the road, something new comes out, something changes and now what was possible isn’t and vise versa. I have seen these kinds of situations, and I encourage taking very good notes and making them so they are always accessible to you/your team so that way a search can be done and the notes appear and you know exactly why, what, how and where the decision was made. When I say you, I mean anyone in a position to make decisions that bring about change in whatever area it might be.

@Madchatthew I can’t see it happening either to be honest. It’s one of the most mature programming languages there is, and given the figures, it’s clear to see is not going anywhere anytime soon.

@phenomlab said in Ex GCHQ employee risk to national security: I can’t believe also that security is so lax that someone without adequate clearance can waltz into a restricted area and take what they want. Yeah I can’t believe that either. It is crazy

@phenomlab well I hope that a better company steps up and puts in a higher bid. If I had the money I would buy TikTok. That platform is a money makers dream. So many people on it now er or was. I think MS will just mess it up like they do everything else. Hell, they can’t even get their own software to work correctly, how would they even keep that one up and running.

@phenomlab I agree with you, otherwise they would have already done that.

@phenomlab said in Which email client do you use?: @DownPW Isn’t this more of an email server in it’s own right rather than an email client? Oh yes sorry… I didn’t pay attention

@crazycells I’m totally unsurprised by any of this. Musk is well known for creating schemes meaning that he profits out of pretty much anything these days. Whilst I admire the business acumen, I certainly don’t agree with the ethics.
