  • Seems the latest “move” by twitter to prevent bot data scraping hasn’t gone down well at all with those who have unverified accounts. They are now being restricted to being able to read either 300 or 600 posts per day.

With charging for a verified account, Twitter is going to see it’s user based significantly deteriorating unless it stops trying to monetize literally every aspect of it’s platform.

Already, the hashtag #RIPTwitter is trending. Not a wise move. I have an account, but hardly use it and it’s only maintained for SSO purposes here.

@crazycells seems that Twitter have since relaxed the restriction, but not removed it entirely.

The verified accounts are now able to read 10,000 posts per day, with unverified accounts able to access 1,000.

Seeing as you have to pay for verified status by monthly subscription, it’s clearly a monetisation effort by Twitter. From my understanding, there are a number of entities that are scraping data from Twitter (and it appears Reddit is experiencing the same) - possibly language models that are being trained to enhance the capabilities of AI engines.

It’s blatantly obvious that this isn’t about them consuming content, but the fact that they aren’t paying. Twitter recently introduced a charge to use its API service that was historically free, and it looks like this is the next money spinner.

@phenomlab clearly, musk is testing the water and will get away with anything people do not react…

I never liked him anyway, but have been hating him after he confessed that he was advertising and backing up “hyperloop” mode of transportation (it is basically tubes with vacuum and magnets) so that municipalities and local governments do not invest in their railroad infrastructure and people buy more car for themselves (hence elon is profiting).

@crazycells I’m totally unsurprised by any of this. Musk is well known for creating schemes meaning that he profits out of pretty much anything these days.

Whilst I admire the business acumen, I certainly don’t agree with the ethics.

@phenomlab this is good. I see this happen a lot. It is unclear because usually it is a group talking and going over things and trying to plan according to the knowledge that they have with what is working and not working now. And yet some time down the road, something new comes out, something changes and now what was possible isn’t and vise versa. I have seen these kinds of situations, and I encourage taking very good notes and making them so they are always accessible to you/your team so that way a search can be done and the notes appear and you know exactly why, what, how and where the decision was made. When I say you, I mean anyone in a position to make decisions that bring about change in whatever area it might be.

and BOUM Personally, I don’t hate American companies. I use their products like everyone else, but I think their economic weight is such that they impose their own rules instead of respecting those of the countries where they do business. And here, for once, the DMA is putting the church back in the middle of the village (French Expression).

@phenomlab said in Ex GCHQ employee risk to national security: I can’t believe also that security is so lax that someone without adequate clearance can waltz into a restricted area and take what they want. Yeah I can’t believe that either. It is crazy

@phenomlab well I hope that a better company steps up and puts in a higher bid. If I had the money I would buy TikTok. That platform is a money makers dream. So many people on it now er or was. I think MS will just mess it up like they do everything else. Hell, they can’t even get their own software to work correctly, how would they even keep that one up and running.

@phenomlab said: @DownPW thanks for spotting (and fixing) this issue. I admittedly threw this together quickly for @jac some time ago, and it hasn’t had any love since. If OK with you, I’ll merge these changes into the github repository? No problem dude
