NodeBB: hCaptcha

Solved Configure

  • Hi,
Does anyone have any instructions on the easy implementation of hCaptcha on the new user registration page?

@mventures You’ll need the plugin nodebb-plugin-spam-be-gone which once installed will provide several mechanisms for protection

You’ll want the hCaptcha module, and you should follow the instructions here

  • Thanks for that! I have installed the plugin but where exactly do I go to see the different mechanisms offered and input the values? I am not able to find the configuration settings as seen on your 1st screenshot.

@mventures Sorry - I should have mentioned that to use

    https://dashboard.hcaptcha.com/

You’ll need to create an account there first. From that point, you’ll be able to use the screenshots I provided.

  • Finally, I got a chance to work on this one but it didn’t go as planned, all because NodeBB wouldn’t save the page every time I click the Save button. I tried on both Safari and Chrome. Please see below. Do you know what the issue is?

@mventures It won’t save because you first have to enable the “Stop Forum Spam” tab and subscribe for a (free) key

I’ve enabled this, and provided you with my key temporarily, which you should change

I then enabled hCaptcha using my details, and registered your site with my hCaptcha account

    This now works as intended

You should of course register your own site and secret keys rather than use mine 🙂

@phenomlab THANK YOU SO MUCH! Really much appreciated again.
I shall definitely change everything and not use your values.

I have the hCAPTCHA values already but not the stopforumspam one. I signed up on that site but I am yet to receive the password by email. Have written to the admin there and waiting for a response.

@mventures Ok, no real hurry - just when you can.

EDIT - I also updated your forum to RC2 as it was still at RC1.

    @phenomlab
Thank you but what are RC1 and RC2?
How do you find out what needs updating?

And I am still waiting on the StopForumSpam password 😞

@mventures the term RC refers to “Release Candidate” which is the version just before software is ready to release to market. Essentially, this signifies that software has successfully passed though both alpha and beta before reaching RC stage.

For the record, there were over 99 beta releases of NodeBB before the devs were satisfied it was ready for release candidate 1 - let alone 2.

The final release will tell you in the ACP when an upgrade is available.

You might want to check your junk email. Typically, these emails are delivered in minutes and not days.

@phenomlab Yes, but it never arrived. So, today I tried again and it worked. I have signed up for the free API key but I am yet to get the email with the details. However, they have the option to get the key from their website which I now have. I shall try using it and see if it works over your one.

Should I tick one of these? I know it’s optional but if there is a benefit in someway, I can tick.

  • Update: I have replaced your values with mine. It seems to be working now.

@mventures none that I know of. I don’t recall selecting these either for mine.

@cagatay as @downpw stated, there isn’t a native tool that will do this for you. You’d need to either develop your own or ask the nodebb team to assist which will be a paid exercise.

@Panda it will use SMTP. In all cases, I never use any plugin to send email. I’ll always send it raw.

@phenomlab I am on a Mac, so I used the “Option + Command + I”, and then performed the steps. It loaded my favicon! I checked on Firefox which I haven’t used before, and it showed my favicon also! That’s fantastic and thank you for the help!

@mventures Yes, exactly. The other icon will restart NodeBB whilst the first icon I referenced will rebuild (recompile) it. The huge strength of NodeBB over Flarum (for example) is that the code is precompiled, and called once at boot. PHP’s code has to repeatedly reload code from source making it much slower.

@cagatay You could experiment with nodebb-plugin-ns-embed but I expect the x-origin tag on the remote site to prevent playback.

@marusaky based on the work completed thus far (in relation to PM exchanges), I’m going to mark this completed. Sending email from the server itself works fine without issue, and DNS appears to be clean (valid SPF, DMARC, and DKIM records). It appears that only Gmail marks incoming messages from your domain as spam - perhaps because of the domain age, which there is nothing we can do to prevent this. Mail delivery to all other domains appears to work fine in al of my tests.

@phenomlab said in nodebb dropdown menu: @kurulumu-net You set it like the below example taken from this site [image: 1637939951821-aae36790-3257-4bb2-ad5a-0d744309876a-image.png] Which presents this [image: 1637939983445-77f47260-2941-4afe-9614-8e17dcfc8c19-image.png] Very interesting… I actually thought this wasn’t possible, as I remember it being asked in the NodeBB forum. Is this something new that’s been implemented? I’ll 100% be doing that when I’m on the laptop over the weekend.
