    I remember @phenomlab saying he only trusts Nord VPN. I looked and compared all the top 5 VPNs last night and Nord usually does come out on top above Proton and Express VPN which seems to have fallen by the way side.

    Do you think Nord’s popularity is because of their aggressive marketing campaigns, the fact YouTube creators will get more from an affiliate link from Nord than another competitor so put it as number 1, or do you think It’s probably a mix because the product delivers?

    @JAC this is a good question and certainly one that will trigger debate. Nord has a good track record for privacy with a no log policy, and has an independent audit to certify this as fact.

    They also have the most number of servers scattered around the globe and also pioneered NordLynx which is based on the their existing Wireguard protocol.

    I suspect much of their popularity comes down to their marketing as you suggest with YouTube influencers and affiliate links, although they aren’t the only brand leveraging this area.

Popular on the privacy subreddits as a Proton Drive alternative. Internxt (Spain) : Open-source, zero-knowledge E2EE, GDPR-based. Offers storage plus a few extra privacy tools. Lifetime plans available. Younger company, so weigh that against the price. pCloud (Switzerland, registered in EU) : Massive caveat: E2EE is not default. It’s a paid add-on called “pCloud Crypto.” Without it your files are encrypted at rest but not zero-knowledge. The draw is genuine lifetime plans, which can be cost-effective over years if you trust their longevity.

If they offered a discount or another incentive, I may well have taken a different view, but to me, it just seems like easy revenue. Much like Surfshark do, they are owned by the same company now and you can tell, there’s always something extra cropping up like dedicated IPs, loads of discounts thrown your way which is fair enough but I don’t think you should have to them thrown at you constantly . Fortunately Proton have kept things simple and have all products under one roof should you buy the right package.
