AI... A new dawn, or the demise of humanity ?

  • @phenomlab this sounds like a technical error; because I have seen the same story being headlined as if “robot attacked human”…

@crazycells interesting indeed! I do agree actually - it does say in the article that it was a programming error, and one machine out of three was left running when the other two were shut down.

  • @phenomlab

billions of dollars in damages are owed for “unlawful copying and use of The Times’s uniquely valuable works”.

so, they create “valuable work” but they can only earn money out of this by suing others… lol…

Yes, exactly. I’d be questioning the “valuable work”

@phenomlab this reminds me old times when Uber came out… and arrogant NYC cab drivers complaining about Uber, how it is very bad for them…

eventually public benefit should be taken into consideration by the court…

@crazycells UK cab drivers did exactly the same!

@phenomlab yes, I personally believe this version of the story… I am quite sure the accident is technical error… but you know how media is… they “love” spreading fear… so they intentionally spreading this news as “robot-uprising”… lol…

    https://news.sky.com/story/human-implanted-with-neuralink-brain-chip-can-control-computer-mouse-just-by-thinking-elon-musk-says-13076041

Evidently, the recipient of this new implant can control a mouse just by thinking. Whilst the potential for such technology is life altering for those who suffer with disabilities, it also raises the immediate concern about how this technology will be governed to prevent it from being used for nefarious purposes.

  • @phenomlab this is more serious than Taylor Swift, this can be used to destroy the life of normal people too… let’s see how long it will take for legislator do something about this…

@crazycells absolutely. It just seems that people only stand up and take notice when it happens to a high profile individual.

@phenomlab in theory, this is already doable… but not “wirelessly”… I guess this is what they are trying to achieve…

in short, when you want to move your pinky finger, you activate certain neuron combinations in the brain and make a certain region of your brain “active” (neurons are activated by the movement of sodium and potassium in/out of the cells and therefore creating “electrical charge polarization” ), so even if your brain cannot control finger muscles, for example due to an injury, this information still can be picked up by the electrodes that are scanning the brain. So, as far as I understood, they are trying to build a technology to convert these electrodes with cables into wireless chips…

I will look further here: https://clinicaltrials.gov (after a quick search, I could not find the name of the company, so I am assuming they are collaborating with some researchers from some institutions)

all clinical trials in the US will be reported here, and results will be shared…

But I would not trust Elon’s tweet for the results of the experiments…we should wait until scientific papers are published… if anything, he is lying and promoting the stocks of this company… this is what he does, he is a manipulator and liar, and he can say anything for economical gain… 🤣

Very interesting points you raised in the above post, and you clearly know more about this than I do - and have a better understanding. I appreciate how this technology can assist those who are mobility impaired, but do worry about it being abused in the future, and I’m sure it will be. I also worry about the safety of such technology.

And you’re right. Elon doesn’t care about the safety aspect and is more focused on the bottom line - profit.

@phenomlab and he is not the scientist of the project… If he is announcing the results or hinting the results, I believe he aims manipulation.
I will check the clinical trials website for more details later when I have more time…

On a side note, this chip placement is an invasive operation, I believe they have to place the chip under the skull, so that it can sense which part of the brain is active. Namely, they have to open a crack on your skull to achieve this. These things are usually not ethical to perform on a healthy person, or someone who will not get any benefit out of it.

Additionally, its use is limited, and I believe in the second article it is exaggerated a lot (when they say it will eventually cure obesity, autism, depression, or schizophrenia). In the first article, it says “it will enable control of your phone or computer, and through them almost any device, just by thinking”… I believe this will be the main use case of these chips(if they become successful) , but Elon is manipulating to soar his stock prizes 😄

Based on this, I’m guessing that ordinary people aren’t exactly queuing up for this…

@phenomlab no, ordinary people cannot get this… basically, the company is trying to achieve to turn the cap below, into a chip that is implanted near brain to be able to read the signals…

    Screenshot 2024-02-27 at 11.32.32.png

This is not something like a cosmetic surgery, so FDA will not approve this for “general use”, it will have a specifically defined target group; and it can be used only for those people. I checked the clinical trials, and searched for “brain computer interface”, for example this study from Mexico has this eligibility criteria:

    • Inclusion Criteria:

Spinal Cord Injury at neurological levels C6 or C7
American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA) classification A, B, C or D
Upper limb spasticity of less or equal to +1 measured with the Modified Ashworth Scale
Time since disease onset of more than 6 months and less than 60 months
Normal or corrected to normal vision

    • Exclusion Criteria:

      Severe attention deficits
Previous diagnosis of traumatic brain injury
Previous diagnosis of peripheral nerve injury
      Previous stroke diagnosis
      Previous diagnosis of neurodegenerative diseases
History of fractures in upper extremities
      Skin lesions
Contractures in upper extremities that hamper mobility
      Excessive muscle spasms

So, when this study is concluded, it can only be used for this specific target group. I wish eventually this technology would be used for other neurological diseases, but currently it is very unlikely. We need way more research to be done before reaching this aim… Elon is currently manipulating the stocks…

As do I. There are also those who suffer with other illnesses such as Fibromyalgia which is one that has no outward signs, but is extremely debilitating for the person who suffers with it. Another would be Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) and this is where that technology could enrich lives.

Elon is not concerned with any of that - just the bottom line as I previously stated.

Here is an update. So one of the problems is that I was coding on windows - duh right? Windows was changing one of the forward slashes into a backslash when it got to the files folder where the image was being held. So I then booted up my virtualbox instance of ubuntu server and set it up on there. And will wonders never cease - it worked. The other thing was is that there are more than one spot to grab the templates. I was grabbing the template from the widget when I should have been grabbing it from the other templates folder and grabbing the code from the actual theme for the plugin. If any of that makes sense. I was able to set it up so it will go to mydomain/blog and I don’t have to forward it to the user/username/blog. Now I am in the process of styling it to the way I want it to look. I wish that there was a way to use a new version of bootstrap. There are so many more new options. I suppose I could install the newer version or add the cdn in the header, but I don’t want it to cause conflicts. Bootstrap 3 is a little lacking. I believe that v2 of nodebb uses a new version of bootstrap or they have made it so you can use any framework that you want for styling. I would have to double check though. Thanks for your help @phenomlab! I really appreciate it. I am sure I will have more questions so never fear I won’t be going away . . . ever, hahaha. Thanks again!

@crazycells I guess the worst part for me was the trolling - made so much worse by the fact that the moderators allowed it to continue, insisting that the PeerLyst coming was seeing an example by allowing the community to “self moderate” - such a statement being completely ridiculous, and it wasn’t until someone else other than myself pointed out that all of this toxic activity could in fact be crawled by Google, that they decided to step in and start deleting posts. In fact, it reached a boiling point where the CEO herself had to step in and post an article stating their justification for “self moderation” which simply doesn’t work. The evidence here speaks for itself.

@justoverclock yes, completely understand that. It’s a haven for criminal gangs and literally everything is on the table. Drugs, weapons, money laundering, cyber attacks for rent, and even murder for hire. Nothing it seems is off limits. The dark web is truly a place where the only limitation is the amount you are prepared to spend.

@Sala impressive. That’s actually a lot harder than it looks. I once worked for a trading firm in the 90s and a trader came to me with a corrupted floppy disk demanding I get it to work. Evidently, it had all of his trading positions on it and he had no backup and he wasn’t impressed when I told him that the chances of data recovery were less than zero.
