@Panda if just seems bizarre practice to me. They clearly state that cPanel comes with the package, yet don’t seem to offer it unless you complain it’s missing!
VPS Provider

Hello,
It has been awhile since I have been here. I hope everyone is doing well. I was wondering what hosting service people recommend. I am currently using Digitalocean and am wondering if I should be using a different provider that cares more about not giving out any data or private information to say anyone, government or otherwise. Not that I have anything to hide, just more privacy the better in my opinion.I have been looking at Linode but not sure about them. I saw a previous post where Mark and some others were using Hertner or something like that.
I am located in the US and am curious as if there is a better provider I should be going with for VPS for hosting websites.
Thanks for everyones’ time and I look forward to hearing what everyone thinks.

So then my other question is then, since I am US based and most of the people that will be accessing the sites will be US based, should I use a US based location and will the same privacy terms and such still apply?
Yes, of course - this makes the most sense - you place the server where the majority of your audience is. In terms of privacy, the servers are owned and operated by Hetzner, although the privacy laws for the geo location and jurisdiction will still apply. However, as Hetzner is not primarily a US operator, they are bound by the parent company’s privacy policy. Here’s a useful comparison

@cagatay I just went to hetzner.com and the prices are amazing. What I can get for even a few more dollars is more than double what I have with Digitalocean.
With hetzner do they follow the same privacy stuff even with their US server locations or would it better better to have a server in Germany or Finland?

@Madchatthew welcome back. Hetzner is what I use, and as they fall within the GDPR, they take privacy extremely seriously. They are also very strict around not even opening port 25 outbound until you have paid your first invoice.
They also carry out numerous security checks - driving license and/or passport are required - I went thought the same process, as has @DownPW. If you look at the donate page on here, you’ll find a Hetzner affiliate link you can use for free credits etc.
In terms of uptime, performance, and reliability, I really can’t fault them.
I’ve used them for a couple of years now and never had an issue with them where I had to reconsider my position and start looking for a new host. Digital Ocean are incredibly expensive in comparison to Hetzner, and you get much more for your money.

@phenomlab This is awesome! I have looked through their different terms and like what I am reading. I will most likely switch over to them.
So then my other question is then, since I am US based and most of the people that will be accessing the sites will be US based, should I use a US based location and will the same privacy terms and such still apply?I think that due to all the billing going through Germany that the answer is yes, but just want to make sure.
I really do appreciate everyone’s input. Also if you have an affiliate link or if I should use someone else’s affiliate link, let me know so that way someone will get some credit for when I switch. Which will be in the next week or so due to newer version of OSs out there.

@phenomlab thank you very much. I will use that link when I set up my new server.
Thanks again!
